Inspired by nature, my work proceeds from careful design and rigorous observation from life. This allows me to seek a broad unity of impression, and hence convey as much as possible the true character, personality and atmosphere of my subject.
I use strong contrasts of lights and dark, together with rich colouring, to aim for a vibrant sense of life and a subtle blend of tradition and the present day.
I take constant inspiration from the work of the American impressionist artist Dennis Miller Bunker, and the French Impressionist Alfred Sisley, whilst the two individual paintings I return to most often are both by Rembrandt, Self Portrait at the Age of 34, and A Bearded Man in a Cap, which hang in The National Gallery, London.
I studied drawing and painting at the Academie Charpentier, Paris, and for four years under the American painter Charles Cecil in Florence.
My work has been exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition, as well as The Gallery in Cork Street, The Leighton House Museum and The Mall Galleries. I have held over six solo exhibitions in the UK, as well as regular participation in numerous group shows and charitable events.
