I design and make metal objects to handle or wear. Some is jewellery worn in traditional ways, other pieces are tactile objects for the fingers to explore. The work is playful, sculptural and engaging, it usually contains balls or round elements and the captive balls may be rolled between finger and thumb. There may be hidden or secure places within the work for containing something secret or precious.
The catches and closures are important to me and they are unusual. I often develop a new closure which is in keeping with a new design, it must be secure and complement the piece.
The materials used are Silver and Gold, alongside ‘base metals’ such as Copper, Brass, Bronze and Gilding Metal as well as high grade stainless steel balls (designed for body contact) which can be incorporated in the work.
Some of the chains are hand crochet ropes in silver wire, differently worked for a tight or an open knit appearance and they are flexible, long lasting and comfortable to wear. Other chains are made with linked elements, original in design and more recently may use cast elements. I develop new ideas by working directly with the metal and by drawing, I am inspired by exhibitions and the natural world and I aspire to find buyers who will appreciate the individuality and craftsmanship in my work.
After leaving school I trained as a doctor and became a General Practicioner. I travelled and worked in New Zealand and then returned to UK and settled into locum GP work before deciding to do an Art Foundation which led on to a degree in 3-Dimensional Crafts, Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics at University of Brighton which I loved. I was able to do locum GP work alongside the degree which was fortunate financially.
After this, in 2002 I was fortunate to find a large but busy practice in Tadley, in the north of Hampshire. However in 2018 I resigned from partnership to become a salaried doctor, I reduced my hours and did a part-time Masters in Metalwork which allowed me to devote real time to my creative practice and I found that working even less in medicine much more enjoyable..
I am currently the chairman of the Hampshire and Berkshire Guild of Craftsmen having been a member since 2000, and regularly exhibit with the Guild members, enjoying the fabulous variety of materials, and fine quality craft work. I have also shown work with Association of Contemporary Jewellers and ACJ Wessex. I am delighted to have recently been accepted as a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
I am grateful to Bryanston for allowing me to pursue Art at A Level when I was there (1979-81) as my creative activities have sustained me through my medical work initially as a medical student, a junior doctor and then as a General Practitioner. My pleasure in Life Drawing which began at school developed significantly as I studied anatomy at Bristol and have designed and made clothes and furniture over the years and I am rarely without a pencil and small book if I want to record a new idea. I love accepting commissions and enjoy teaching beginners and intermediates the pleasures of metalwork in my workshop near Basingstoke.
