Oil paints
h: 45 w: 45 d: 5 (cms).
This is a painting of a Samburu woman carrying her child. The background is a Kenyan fabric, patterned and colourful, which holds traditional symbolism. The fabrics I use for my backgrounds are all shawls that are traditionally worn by Samburu women and men, giving the painting a symbolic importance. The choice of black and white paints for the subject came from the idea of contrasting the colours of the piece. I wanted both background and the subject to be the primary focus for people looking at the painting, allowing people to not only consider what’s in the middle, but also around the portrait.
