Stoic Nymph

In this sculpture I explored personal themes of inner conflict, and how I perceive myself. It references ‘masking’ - ‘the process of intentionally, or unintentionally, hiding aspects of yourself to avoid harm’ - a term heard around me for much of my life. It shows a woman who seems calm and content, yet her eyes act as a pathway to her inner thoughts, where a melancholy is echoed. Stoic Nymph (title of the sculpture) takes modern inspiration from sculptures by Coderch and Malavia, as well as also drawing from mythological references, such as the painting The Lament for Icarus – Death Wings Surrounded by Nymphs by Draper Repero. The references can be seen in the idealised gentle faces of the nymphs, and their delicacy that they possess.

Vínculo Inquebrável (Unbreakable bond)

This work is a part of my series of sculptures based on the relationship between me and my twin. Demonstrating how now we seem like entirely separate beings, even though we are intrinsically linked from birth which is why I chose to show us in the foetal position. I originally wanted it to be cast in plaster, but given its properties (being brittle and weak) it was inevitably also cast in marble, however left with a rough finish, appearing plaster like. The piece references a stronger bond, but not taking away from the pure solidity of the larger more refined marble piece. Having it cast enabled me to piece the two together, creating a double-sided relief, or allow me to present them side by side like shown

A 3D ‘book’ of stories of everyday lives, Four Storeys displays characters and environments. Using freeze frames, it portrays the uniqueness of mundanity, asking the viewer to fill in the gaps. Rebecca’s mum grounded her, ruining her life. She’s had to cancel a date, so boyfriend Murray climbs a tree outside her window. He may have to disappear if Rebecca’s mum checks up on her. Meryl’s story is fundamentally undramatic. Junk mail piles up, cats multiply, knitting lengthens. Her photos are reminders of past vibrant times. Meryl is obsessed by cats, but each receives equal love. Jenny and Mark are moving because the kids need more space. It’s a tiring and emotional process. Boxing belongings, they reminisce. Part of them will remain here, even if it’s under a new coat of paint. Reclusive Colin is throwing a party. He’s nervous but trying to put himself out there. Waiting for guests to arrive, Colin thinks a drink will loosen himself and others up. The night spirals into joyful chaos.

My piece, “Spires & Domes” is inspired by Giovanni Batista Piranesi ink drawings as I was looking into utopian and dystopian architecture. It is a combination of towers, domes and cathedrals which intrigued me because of their dynamic structures. My aim was to create a utopian scene with the use of some governmental and religious buildings to symbolise togetherness and a secure structure, but despite this it has become dystopian as it has fragmented into an abyss.

The uncertainty is explored in two terms; the immediate future-determining decisions faced by the sitter and the authenticity of visual representation in a digital world. We put on fronts to mask emotion and control a situation but in a world where we become reams and layers of uncontrolled data, the question arises of what or who can put masks on us and wether or not we can see them slip.

This hand-built teapot explores the artist’s concept of “double vision”—the disorientation of seeing multiple features after a blow to the head. Made from 5% terra cotta and 95% white clay, the piece reflects this distortion through a double lid, triple handle, and dual arched base, creating a layered, surreal form. Influenced by Bauhaus design, it merges function with abstract geometry, challenging the viewer’s perception of utility. The raw, unglazed surface enhances its sculptural presence, making it as much a conceptual artwork as a vessel. This is a functional sculpture—a visual expression of altered perception rendered in ceramic.

The Final Dawn presents a burnt wooden cabinet, the only object left after a house fire that claimed a man's family. Inside, painted scenes narrate his brief absence— leaving for groceries-and his return to a home consumed by flames. The cabinet becomes his personal torment: a relic too painful to keep, yet too precious to abandon. It stands as both a vessel of memory and a monument to irreversible loss, inviting viewers into the fragile space between grief and remembrance.

The concept for this piece originated while visiting the saltmarshes of South Carolina near Georgetown in the US after completing a residency at Penland School of Craft. Rising sea levels, agricultural runoff, coastal development, invasive species and climate change are some of the many threats to the saltmarshes in South Carolina. They are of huge value providing refuge and nursery habitat for more than 75 percent of fisheries species. Many extraordinary shells are to be found on the sand bars of the marshes. One, in particular, is a strong visual reference for the sculptural vessel TIDELINE, a whelk with a double skinned, heavily pitted surface. A visible line around the bowl (achieved through patination) references the change in sea levels. The perforation references destruction of the saltmarshes but it is hoped that the graceful curves of the piece reflect the undeniable beauty of these curious molluscs and their unique environment.

This is a painting based on the Russian fairytale of Sadko, a Russian merchant who is trapped in an underwater world (seduced by mermaids) but faithful to his wife above water (represented by an angel in my painting). It was inspired by the masterpiece of Ilya Repin which is housed in St Petersburg, following a year spent studying art at the Repin Academy of Arts in 2011. Notably, it was one of few un-commissioned works Repin undertook and its majestic quality captured my imagination. My version of Repin's Sadko is half the original size. The size is 131cm wide x 171cm high framed

My work explores our attempts to construct a complete understanding from fragmented information. I am interested in the interplay of seeing/masking/revealing, and the space in-between, where these acts become the subject as much as the subject itself. This idea is further illuminated by the Japanese notion of ‘ma’, the concept that encompasses ‘space’, ‘gaps’ or ‘pause’ with a deeper meaning than just the physical space between things (often referred to as negative space). This concept refers to the conscious awareness of this space and its power to create rhythm, harmony and balance. It is the space that allows elements to coexist and relate to each other making the whole greater than the sum of its parts. The triptych evokes the flashes of information one might receive when looking out of the window on a train or car journey. The brain wants to fill in the gaps and make sense of the partial information.

Necklace - Hand crochet, 5 loop, double-knit with hand made catch

This necklace is hand made by French-knitting silver wire, in a technique I developed and have refined since 1997. The catch is designed specifically so that the ropes can be riveted into place and never heated. The ropes are flexible and extremely comfortable to wear and I make a variety of different lengths & styles as required into necklaces or bracelets. The lasered hallmark is placed discretely on the catch which is embellished with small balls to fit with my Round Objects aesthetic! There is a reassuring click as the it closes and is easy to release by lifting the loop from over the ball. Silver may tarnish with lack of use but can be rubbed with a polishing cloth or wadding if not handled for a time to bring back the shine. Ikarus / copper is a wall-hanging sculpture consisting of a series of geometric regions, each formed by pouring deep cast resin over a section of chromogenic print. Each region is individually sculpted; rising to a different height. When mounted on a semi-reflective background (such as copper) and suitably illuminated, the light play and refraction is infinitely variable. Ikarus / copper - which took 3 months to fabricate - is world unique.
